Senior Infants

Senior Infant work 11th -25th May 2020

English

  • Jolly Phonics – * Revise 1 sound per week*

‘ch’ sound

Activities: With these two letter sounds you might need to remind the children that when they see these two sounds together we blend them together to make a new sound instead of sounding them out individually. Try to think of 5 words with each sound and if you can create a short sentence with these words. Below are some words to help you. The children will receive a worksheet to practice the ‘ch’ sound.

The video below shows us how to sound out the “ch” sound within words.

Reading
Read a story to your child daily as assigned on myON website resource. If you do not have access to this. Read any story book that is available to you.

Oral Language
Continue to talk about the days of the week, months of the year and the season summer. Try playing an oral language game like “what/who am I?” ask children to pick an object, give you a clue about it and allow you to guess what it is!

For extra work: You can ask your child to write their daily news.  Or you can call out simple sentences and have your child write it.

Today is Monday.  It is a sunny day.  The season is summer.  I will play in my garden.

Maths

  • Counting

Practice counting forwards and backwards from numbers 1 – 20
Practice counting in 2’s or 10’s

  • Numbers

Practice doubles; 1+1=2, 2+2=4 etc
the children could write these
Use materials around the house (lego, pasta, blocks etc) to make sums.  Lay out 4 pasta and 5 pasta and get your child to add them.  To make it a bit harder hide one group. 4(hidden by a plate/cloth) + 5 = ???

  • Writing

The children can practice how to write their numbers 1-10.  A work sheet has been provided for this

          Topic of week Length
Using household items the children can measure how long things are at home.  Use words like ‘long, short, longer, shorter’
The children can measure the length of the garden using their feet or hands, measure the table using forks, measure their bedroom using lego etc.

Gaeilge

Practice counting to 10

A haon, A dó, a trí, a ceathair, a cúig, a sé, a seacht, a hocht, a naoi, a deich

Practice saying;

  • Is mise… – my name is…
  • Is cailin mé – I am a girl
  • Is buachail mé – I am a boy

SESE
Weather watch: every day next week record the weather. Use symbols to record the weather. A picture of a sun if it’s a sunny day, a cloud for a cloudy day etc.  Put an empty bottle in the garden and catch any rainwater – mark it each day and see if rain falls every day.  Does the amount of rain go up or down? If it goes down where does it go?

SPHE
The children can discuss how we’re all different and special.  Even though we all have similarities we all have different talents.  The can draw a picture of what makes them special – maybe they’re really good at football, or cooking, or helping in the garden.  Encourage them to think of what makes them special and how it’s good that we’re not all the same.
